A couple packing boxes before they move house

The Ultimate House Move Checklist Before Surrey Removals Arrives

Table of Contents

You’ve booked your moving date with Surrey Removals — great call. But before our team turns up, there’s some prep work that can save you time, stress, and money.

We’ve helped hundreds of Surrey families move with ease. And we’ve seen it all — from last-minute packing panic to misplaced passports. Want your move to be smooth from the moment we arrive? This is the checklist you need.

Have You Decluttered Before the Big Day?

Why pay to move things you’ll just throw out at the new house?

At Surrey Removals, we always recommend decluttering before we arrive. It helps us load faster — and you save on space, effort, and cost.

Tackle it like this:

  • Clothes: If it hasn’t been worn in a year, let it go.

  • Kitchen: Broken blender? Chuck it. Unused gadgets? Donate.

  • Garage/Loft: If you forgot you owned it, you probably don’t need it.

Use four piles:
Keep | Donate | Sell | Bin

One client in Woking cut their moving load by nearly 30% just by doing this. That’s hours saved on move day.

Are You Packing or Using Our Full Packing Service?

Surrey Removals offers a professional packing service — but if you’re doing it yourself, don’t leave it to the last minute.

If you’re self-packing:

  • Start 2 weeks in advance — minimum.

  • Use strong, double-walled boxes (we supply these on request).

  • Label every box with:

If we’re packing for you:

  • Set aside items you’ll move yourself — think passports, jewellery, laptops.

  • Clearly mark anything you don’t want packed.

Tip from our team: Put a sticker on drawers or cupboards that should stay closed — it avoids confusion.

Have You Packed a ‘Survival Box’?

Picture this: you arrive at your new home and can’t find the kettle.

Don’t let that happen. Pack a “Moving Day Essentials Box” and keep it with you.

Include:

  • Tea, coffee, snacks, mugs

  • Phone chargers, extension leads

  • Toilet roll, soap, bin bags

  • Towels and bedding

  • Any pet supplies or kids’ toys

Top tip: We’ve had customers in Wimbledon use a bright red box for this — easy to spot, even in a sea of cardboard.

Is Your Home Ready for Us?

When our crew shows up, we work fast. But clear access makes all the difference.

Before Surrey Removals arrives:

  • Take apart beds, wardrobes, or flat-pack furniture if you’re not using our assembly service.

  • Unplug and defrost your fridge/freezer 24 hours before.

  • Disconnect washing machines and dishwashers (we can help if pre-arranged).

  • Clear hallways, stairs, and doorways of any clutter.

Parking check:

  • Do you need to reserve a bay?

  • Will our vans fit outside?

  • Let neighbours know — especially on narrow roads or shared drives.

We’ll always do our best — but good access helps us work faster and safer.

Have You Notified Everyone About the Move?

You’d be surprised how many people forget this bit.

Important people to tell:

  • Gas, electricity, and water suppliers

  • Council tax and electoral roll

  • Internet and TV services

  • DVLA, HMRC, your bank

  • Schools, GPs, vets

  • Home insurance and car insurers

Use Royal Mail’s redirection service to catch anything you’ve missed.

Ask yourself: What if your next council tax letter or bank statement went to the wrong house?

Have You Done a Final Walkthrough?

It’s easy to miss things when the pressure’s on.

Before we pull up in our Surrey Removals van, do a final sweep:

  • Check the back of all cupboards and wardrobes

  • Look under beds and behind furniture

  • Take photos of meter readings

  • Confirm you’ve got all keys (including windows, back doors, sheds, garages)

  • Leave instructions, manuals or alarm codes for the new owner

Extra tip: Take your own photos of each room when you leave, especially if you’re renting.

Is Your New Home Move-In Ready?

We’ve helped people move into homes with no power or heating. Avoid that drama.

Check before move day:

  • Do you have keys for every lock?

  • Is the electricity and water switched on?

  • Have you confirmed utility accounts at your new address?

  • Are bulky items going to fit through the door?

One family in Epsom got to their new home and couldn’t get the sofa in the lounge. Don’t be them — measure twice!

Quick Wins to Make Life Easier

Small things that make a big difference on moving day:

  • Use suitcases to pack heavy items (like books).

  • Colour-code your labels by room — use stickers or coloured tape.

  • Photograph the back of TVs and Wi-Fi setups before unplugging.

  • Keep a small toolkit handy (Allen keys, screwdrivers, pliers).

  • Arrange childcare or pet care — the fewer distractions, the better.

Remember: Our Surrey Removals team is quick and efficient — but the more prepared you are, the smoother it’ll go.

Final Thoughts from the Surrey Removals Team

A stress-free move starts before we even arrive.

We’re here to do the heavy lifting — literally — but being prepared helps everyone.
Ask yourself:
✅ Are the boxes labelled?
✅ Have I packed an essentials box?
✅ Are we ready to go the moment the van pulls up?

If the answer is “yes”, then you’re set. And if not? No worries — give us a call. We’ll guide you through it.
